1. Turn off the water main (usually located on the footpath near the front of your house) or if you have a ceiling tank you may also need to turn off the outlet valve there as well.

2. Put buckets under the leaks, you can also turn on all cold water taps in you house (reduces the water flow to the leak) and flush the toilet as well.

3. Find the leak – it may be a burst pipe in the ceiling, split ceiling tank, or an overflow from the ceiling tank caused by a stuck/failed ballcock.

4. Once you have located the problem, repair the leak or if it is beyond your technical expertise, call your local plumber.
